- The Online Atlanta Society presents:
- "Intro to BBSing"
-
- The purpose of this disk is to provide the new modem user with a simple
- introduction to the world of Bulletin Board Systems. The benefits of this
- are covered in the section titled "What is a Bulletin Board System?".
-
- Some of the files contained on this disc are:
-
- README 1ST This file
- START TXT Information about BBS's
- OAS TXT Information about the O.A.S.
- ABBL-48L TXT The OAS Bulletin Board list (LONG VERSION)
- BEGINNER TXT An information file to help you navigate around on BBS's
- that use PCBoard as their BBS software.
- MEMBER APP Membership application to the OAS
- LIST COM A program to list files to the screen (you're using it now)
- LISTDOC ZIP A compressed file containing the documentation for LIST.COM
- PKUNZIP EXE A program to decompress files from BBS's
- COMMODOC ZIP A compressed file containing the documentation for COMMO
- COMMO EXE An excellent communications program
- COMMO FON Dialing Directory File needed by COMMO
- COMMO MAC Macro " " " "
- COMMO HLP Help Screens " " " "
- COMMO SET Setup Config " " " "
-
- The first five files may be viewed on the screen or printed on your
- printer from the menu displayed when you type START.
-
- Files available on bulletin boards are condensed or "archived" into much
- smaller files to cut down on file transfer time. To make these files usable,
- they must be "unzipped" or unsqueezed after you have downloaded them. For a
- quick look at how to use the files, type PKUNZIP by itself and a short file
- will be displayed to the screen telling you about the program. For now, all
- you need to know is to type PKUNZIP whatever.ZIP to decompress the file so you
- can use it. PKUNZIP is part of a larger package called PKZ204C.EXE, which
- contains PKZIP, the full documentation for all the programs, and registration
- forms so that you can pay the author (Phil Katz) for his program. As always,
- we highly recommend that you download the full package so that you have all
- the docs (documentation).
-
-
- DECOMPRESSING THE DOCUMENTATION:
- The file LIST.ZIP is a compressed file that contains the documentation
- for LIST, the program that displays the text files to the screen.
- COMMODOC.ZIP is a compressed file containing additional documentation for
- commo, the communications package. To unzip them, copy these two files
- and PKUNZIP.exe to another disk (there is not enough room to unzip them
- on this disk). Then, type PKUNZIP LIST. This will produce the file
- List.doc. Type PKUNZIP COMMODOC. This will produce the documentation files
- for commo. PKUNZIP's docs are not on this disk, by kind permission of
- the author (Phil Katz), in order to save space. Remember to download
- PKZ204c, its successor as soon as you get a chance, to get the docs for it.
-
- ABOUT COMMO:
- Commo, the communications program, may be run directly from the menu. Its
- dialing directory already contains the numbers for OAS member systems, so you
- can get started right away. It was chosen because of its ease of use for
- beginners, its power for more advanced users, its size, and the helpfulness of
- its author, among other reasons.
-
-
- ABOUT SHAREWARE & PUBLIC DOMAIN:
- All the files on this disk are either "public domain" or "shareware"
- programs. This means that they may be shared with others without
- violating a copyright. Unlike "commercial" software that you buy
- at a store, these two kinds of software are usually obtained from
- bulletin board systems or can be passed between friends. Public
- domain software is software that has been placed in the "public domain"
- by the authors and can be given away and used without any restrictions.
- Shareware is freely distributed, but if you find the software useful
- and use it regularly, you are asked by the authors to send a suggested
- amount of money to an address displayed on the screen. Commo, the
- communication program on this disk and List, the program used to
- display the text files to the screen, are both shareware. If you
- like these programs, we encourage you to download the complete programs
- (which include documentation) from a bulletin board and send in the
- suggested registration.
